Jason Landry: Disappeared After Accident

The morning after, his Nissan Altima was discovered in disrepair and abandoned on Salt Flat Road near Luling in Caldwell County. His knapsack, clothes and other possessions were strewn haphazardly in the vicinity, but Landry himself was nowhere to be found. According to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, Landry’s disappearance is not linked to any criminal activity, and it is speculated that Landry might have wandered away from the crash site on his own accord, with wildlife potentially accounting for his disappearance.

Despite this, Landry’s family shares that the Texas Attorney General and their personal investigator are actively working on the case and will undertake additional searches. His father believes that his son has since passed on, but still harbours optimism in discovering the truth behind the incident.

“After the passage of two years, one can only imagine the limited number of positive scenarios that could rationally explain what has occurred. It is highly probable that Jason has entered into the great beyond,” Kent Landry, his father, stated. “We now seek closure in knowing what led him there and what circumstances ultimately befell him.”

On the night of December 13th, 2020, Jason Landry a young 21-year-old student from Texas State was en route to Missouri City to reunite with his family for the holidays. Tragically, he never reached his destination.

The Theories

The authorities conducted an extensive search throughout Luling, scouring streets, businesses, and residential areas for any surveillance footage. However, their efforts were in vain, and no useful footage was found.

The investigation heavily relied on Jason’s digital footprint, revealing that at 11:24 pm, he was in Luling, having used Waze to navigate his way from San Marcos. At that time, Jason minimized Waze and opened SnapChat, ultimately missing the turn he was supposed to take and ending up on Salt Flat Road.

Several theories emerged in this case, the first of which suggests that Jason may have encountered a deer or some other wild animal on the road, causing him to crash his vehicle.

The area where Jason crashed was notorious for having ferrel hogs, weighing between 200 and 300 pounds, roaming about. The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office posited that if Jason was dead, he may have fallen prey to these hogs.

Kent, a spokesperson for the police, stated that they viewed Jason’s case as a single-car accident, with the possibility that he was consumed by the hogs.

By February 2021, Jason’s case had attracted significant media attention, with several Facebook groups dedicated to his disappearance, and a $10,000 reward and a billboard erected on Hwy 183 going from Luling to Lockhart, Texas.

The Private Investigator

A private investigator and retired FBI agent named Abel Pena became involved in Jason’s case, having been approached by his daughter, who had attended Texas State and dated one of Jason’s friends.

A team of retired FBI agents and border patrol agents offered their services to the Landry family, working in tandem with Pena, until their relationship deteriorated.

Pena criticized the investigation, highlighting that the crash site and the surrounding area where the clothes were found had been trampled on, and that the car should have been forensically tested before being towed.

Pena and his team discovered that the intersection of Austin St. and Magnolia Ave. was a drug hotspot. He visited the area, speaking with residents, and set up a tip line, which garnered a significant number of responses from people who feared drug dealers in the region.

Several tips received suggested that Jason’s disappearance was not accidental. In fact, some claimed that Jason had not been driving the car that ended up on Salt Flat Rd, and that clothing was thrown about to stage the scene.

In January 2022, Pena received a letter at his residence, confirming that Jason had been killed by drug dealers, as several tipsters had claimed.

However, the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office rejected this theory, firmly believing that Jason walked away from the crash and was heavily under the influence of drugs.

Other Information

The Texas Attorney General’s Office established a cold case unit in December 2021.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office divulged that Jason had searched online for “how long can you live in the woods without food?” and “how long can you go in the wilderness?”

On July 22, 2022, an unconscious man was discovered in the Bronx. Although he bore a striking resemblance to Jason, he was not him, and out of respect for him and his family, no photo was released.
